"Four Day Music Production Workshop for Young People"

July 12th - 15th 2010
In association with R.A.P (Respect All People)

"I loved this course, I learnt heaps!"

Over the four days, five young people aged 14-24 myself, Paul Johnson (Community Youth Worker, Motueka) and A.J Hickling (Musician of Diwata and Spirit of Song Project) spent time together making a piece of music. In the mornings we would begin with a drum Jam on Djembes, this helped free us up, as we explored rhythm and played percussion games, good for left/right brain link up and general creatively.

The first day of the course was spent getting to know each other and jamming.

"It was a lot of fun jamming with the other musicians; I thought this was a very enjoyable music project".

We had lots of fun and recorded some of the jams, the young people learnt about setting up audio recording equipment and monitoring the feed.

On the second day the young people chose a piece of music from the previous jam sessions that they would like to turn into a song. The young people chose one of the more mellow sessions to work on, the rest of this day was spent working on song writing, we explored positive ideas about what young people would like the world to be like, focusing on what they would like and not what they don't like.

"Having more people that are willing to help, everyone to have the same image To make it a better world"

"To Boogie Everyday!"

Then they record the vocals, all the young people sang a piece of the song that they had worked on.

The third day was spent by looking into the various computer programmes available and learning about music production, sound engineering and mix down. Work was begun on the track.

The fourth day was more intensive editing and mixing of the Song with all the young people having their input into the sound. Also A.J imparted some wisdom about the music industry and introduced the young people to marketing and networking ideas to grow their career within the industry.

"I enjoyed it immensely, within four days I have learnt so much, the things I wanted to learn and that are relative to me, I am so happy I took this opportunity to do this and don't regret any of it!"

"It was awesome I enjoyed everyday"

There are many outcomes and results to this project. The young people have learnt things about the process of playing and recording music, they have expanded their horizons' of what is possible within music and have extended there talents and passions to new areas of music and music production. Each participant has shared in an enriching programme from which they have learnt collaboration, creativity, technical skills, practice and patience. They have learnt about focus and team-work, respect, enjoyment and celebration. They have come away with new experiences and skills and piece of music they can be proud of.

"Collaborating all together on one song and sharing our ideas and seeing them come together to make an awesome piece of music"

Boogie Everyday

We gotta Boogie' Everyday…
What yah doin' sittin' down now?
We gotta Boogie' Everyday…
We gotta stand up and be proud…
We gotta Boogie' Everyday…
Say what?
We gotta Boogie' Everyday…

Well, every single thing,
Yes, every little thing,
Is beautiful to me,
To me and he and she,
From every grain of sand,
To every wisp of wind,
Go on hold out your hand,
And grab your next of kin,
Well, I can feel the flow,
From inside myself,
Its time to let it show,
And understand your health,
Its time to realise
And take in everything,
Just look into her eyes,
And see your Mother King…

We gotta Boogie' Everyday…
What yah doin' sittin' down now?
We gotta Boogie' Everyday…
We gotta stand up and be proud…
We gotta Boogie' Everyday…
Say what?
We gotta Boogie' Everyday…

I remember when I was young,
I never really could understand,
Now I know what's goin' on,
Something's got to change,
And I don't know where I'm gunna go,
But I know I gotta' do what I can,
All everybody needs is a little bit of love,
And to care about the world,
Need to help each other out and maybe,
Just maybe,
We can make a better place…

We gotta Boogie' Everyday…
What yah doin' sittin' down now?
We gotta Boogie' Everyday…
We gotta stand up and be proud…
We gotta Boogie' Everyday…
Say what?
We gotta Boogie' Everyday…
