Adult Learning Support
Adult Learning Support (ALS) is a not for profit organisation that exists to empower the Nelson and Motueka communities through Literacy, Language and Numeracy (LLN) tuition.
Any member of the community who needs FREE help with reading, writing, spelling, maths, study skills, unit standards, Correspondence School or even the Road Code can use our services. Our tuition is entirely learner-centred - that is, rather than offering prescribed courses we work with the learner to assess what they need then tailor a course of study to suit them.
Some learners come to us for help with their apprenticeship or other qualification, while others come with a specific end in mind such as completing the theory section of their driver's licence. Others again may have no formal end but want to be able to read to their children, or help them with their homework.
Trouble with reading and writing starts at an early age and the reasons for this trouble vary between each person. Learning difficulties such as dyslexia are common. ALS in Motueka uses the Lexia suite of computer software (amongst other strategies) specifically for helping people with dyslexia.

Symptoms of learning difficulties often emerge at primary school and the school experience has often been negative for our learners. For this reason we are keen to emphasise that we are not like school. Tuition is delivered 1:1 or in small groups and learning is voluntary, confidential and happens in an environment of mutual respect. Importantly, there is no direct cost to the learner - assistance won't cost them a cent.
Adult Learning Support has been active in the Tasman region for 30 years. We're part of a nationwide network of organisations known as Literacy Aotearoa - one of New Zealand's largest literacy providers.
