Surprises in nominations for Community Board and Council

August 12th, 2016
[by David Armstrong]

Nominations have just closed for the local body elections, throwing up some interesting scenarios in the Motueka ward.

Only four people have been nominated for the four Motueka Community Board positions so all will be appointed. They are newcomers Brent Maru and Claire Hutt (making the first woman on the board for six years), and incumbents Richard Horrell and Paul Hawkes.

However, Paul is also standing for Ward Councillor on the Tasman District Council, and if he is successful there then he will not be able to be a Community Board member also as Ward Councillor takes "priority". If that happens then there will be a by-election for the fourth board member.

Again, though, Paul may not necessarily become a Ward Councillor as there is competition from four other strong candidates for the three positions.

David Ogilvie, presently a Community Board member, has decided to stand for a Council seat, and incumbents Barry Dowler and Peter Canton are also standing.

The fifth candidate for Motueka Ward Councillor is Martin Lucas who lives in Tapu Bay. Long-standing Councillor Jack Inglis has decided to retire from local government and is not standing.

The expected nominees for the position of Tasman District Mayor (who Motueka people can vote for) are Richard Kempthorne, Kit Maling and Maxwell Clark.

Motueka Online will next week open a section of the website on which candidates who Motueka people can vote for can post their profiles and answer questions from voters.

Congrats to the successful candidates of the new Community Board - great to see at least one woman for Motueka at long last!
