Christmas lunch ends busy year for Historical Assoc

The Riwaka Hotel was once again the venue for the Motueka and Districts Historical Association to celebrate another busy and successful year.

This is the fourth year we have enjoyed a Christmas luncheon at the hotel. Their two course meal is always value for money, the service prompt and the dining room is spacious and we have it all to ourselves.

Our main occupation all year, other than going on trips and having speakers each month, has been researching the history of the Motueka Wharf in preparation for the publication of a book being published in conjunction with author Carol Dawber.

This has involved interviewing people who worked at the wharf, played at the wharf, sailed on the many ships and boats that visited the wharf or lived in the area.

Many of these same people also had photographs which we scanned and recorded the events that were captured.

A small research team gathered material from many sources and these were collated, a timeline formed and along with the photographs sent off to the publisher to write the captions.

The resulting book will be ready for launching at the marina area of the Motueka Wharf at 2.00pm on 14th February 2016, the exact same day that the wharf on the Moutere Lagoon was opened 100 years ago.

So make a date and bring your Valentine to the marina to see what a thriving area it is today. Have a coffee, buy a book and stroll round the wharf area discovering the rich history of this part of town.
