Council plans further upgrades to cycle trail
September 30th, 2014
Tasman District Council is hoping to secure more than $300,000 for work on the Great Taste Trail, to be used on several sections that need improvements, including some sub-standard spots in Motueka.
A recommendation to the council's engineering services meeting last week was to use $114,000 of uncommitted funding, along with $40,000 from the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust, to match anticipated funds of $154,000 from the Government.
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has confirmed that Tasman's Great Taste Trail is approved as part of the Great Rides network, and has itemised work that needs to be addressed - nine jobs estimated to cost $385,000.
Most notable for Motueka residents is the estimated $36,000 to move the trail away from an area of erosion by the Motueka foreshore near the Raumanuka Reserve (see our earlier story).
Other planned improvements around Motueka include $47,000 for path widening along High Street from Toad Hall to Courtney Street, and $14,000 for a pathway along Old Wharf Road.
Councillors were advised that if there is insufficient funding to complete all the work, the jobs will be prioritised.
The trail has been completed from Nelson through Richmond to Kaiteriteri and through to Wakefield. The Mapua to Kaiteriteri section will be officially opened on October 11th.
The council, in this year's annual plan, has committed $300,000 to building the Wakefield to Spooners tunnel section but subject to equal funding being gained from another source outside of the council.
