Parklands School entrance area opened up

August 30th, 2014

Working bees over the past two weekends has already seen the Parklands School's High Street entrance opened up to a variety of "place making" opportunities. (See our earlier story here.)

First, most of the remainder of the old iron fence that separated the entrance from the museum forecourt (atea) was removed, making an immediate visual impact.

Then the main focus became thinning out the overgrown and poorly maintained shrubbery in the south-west corner. (See photos below.)

Marion Edwin, the school's Board of Trustees chair who is driving the project, says this area initially will be set up as a seating area and some new planting used to make it more attractive.

It is hoped that some student artwork in the form of mural boards would be created to back this corner and soften the sight of the rear end of the neighbouring shop.

The core of the expected new design will depend largely on decisions about the health of the large tree that dominates the entrance way and museum atea. Until then, at least the school entrance is now open and more inviting, and encouraging better use of the space.
