Temporary co-op art gallery opens in Motueka

A new art gallery opened in Motueka last Saturday, the "Art Hub" located at 389 High Street opposite the Caltex petrol station.

Eight local artists are exhibiting their paintings, pastel and pencil drawings, ceramics, flax weaving, fibre sculpture, etc.

The artists involved in the cooperative venture are Yvonne Hammond, Helena Morris, Vicki Cowling, Pam Wood, Rowena Lukomska, Barbara McIntosh, Joyce Griffin (pictured below manning the gallery) and Cushla Moorhead. Some funding for the initiative was received from the Tasman Creative Communities fund.

"We are a small group of committed artists who meet regularly to share inspiration," Yvonne told The Guardian newspaper. "Our vision is a cooperative art gallery in Motueka."

The gallery is open seven days from 10.00am to 5.00pm, manned by one or more of the contributing artists.

Initially they sought to use temporarily empty shopfronts in the central shopping strip, but found that building owners and their agents were generally unwilling to accommodate them on any short-term basis.

Then building owner Brett Stevens secured for them the present building for a limited period.

"We intend to support upcoming artists into a community gallery space through mentoring with exhibiting artists," said Yvonne.

"This process of sharing information and education will include art and exhibition practices, picture framing, presentation, business planning and growing the business of art, an online presence."
