Landmark church to be reopened this year

March 24th, 2014

After a year and a half as a no-go zone, the historic St Andrew's Uniting Church will be seismically strengthened and re-opened by the end of this year, with the help of further fundraising.

After an Initial Evaluation Procedure rated the building at 15% of New Building Standard, the church was forced to close in August of 2012.

A number of options have since been explored. "With the support and encouragement of community leaders and the wider community, the St Andrew's Parish Council decided to proceed with the seismic strengthening of the church building," says the minister, Rev Peter Norman.

The church, which was built in 1917 by Stilwell and Co for 1160 pounds, is renowned for its Gothic architecture and excellent acoustics.

"Many families in this district have an historic association with the church and many have expressed a heartfelt desire to see the building remain," Peter says.

"The St Andrews complex is a community facility and when completed will once again function as a spiritual and social centre for the people of Motueka and its environs."

The Parish has received an estimate from a local construction company to reinstate the church building and seismically strengthen the hall behind it for $375,000 plus GST. This does not include the cost upgrading of the kitchen and toilet facilities.

"It was hoped to have the work on the church completed in June of this year, but due to delays the building probably won't be consecrated until late 2014.

"The Parish has access to some funds but will need to make up the difference through fundraising. An Op Shop Fashion Show held last year raised $2000 and a Committee has been set up to initiate further fundraising events and activities."

Donations can be made by going to the Motueka Uniting Parish page under the "Church restoration fundraising" heading.
