Crafted poppies to commemorate Anzac Day 2015

November 22nd, 2014
[by David Armstrong]

Preparations are under way for a community-wide commemoration of World War 1, with people being asked to craft red poppies to mark the centennial next Anzac Day.

Invitations are going out next week to groups and individuals who are knitters, sewers, felters and craft makers to help decorate the town with red flowers.

The chief organisers - Motueka RSA and the Crafty Tarts group - are asking people to help them to make poppies to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the 1st World War.

Thecrafted poppies will be sewn onto army blankets or wreaths and made into displays in the library, museum, RSA and shop windows prior to Anzac Day 2015.

The RSA will supply some red wool, knitting needles, crochet hooks, buttons, ribbon and other materials required, but they say any donations of red wool would be appreciated and can be dropped in to the RSA, Library, Red Cross, or to Crafty Tart members.

Patterns are available for crochet, knitting and felt shapes of poppies. They can be emailed to you, or you can pick them up at the RSA, the Library, or from the Crafty Tarts group.

"If you are up for the challenge and want to be creative and have a go at designing your own, anything goes, any art media as long as the poppies are red," says Crafty Tart co-ordinator Val Armstrong.

For those who would like to learn how to make them, workshops will be held at the library in January. Dates for those will be posted in the Library.

Schools will also be invited to participate, to make paper or paper mache poppies (or other materials) also for displays, and maybe a competition will be arranged for them.
