Our Town gears up for busier times
November 21st, 2014
Downtown Motueka is getting ready for another big holiday season, kicking off on Friday night with the big annual Christmas Starlight Parade.
Not only will the parade draw the usual large crowd and provide entertainment for locals and visitors, but it will also mark the return of the flowering hanging baskets outside the shops.
The business promotion organisation Our Town Motueka is once again organising the Starlight Parade, and next week their new coordinator Julie Jacobson will be visiting all shops to see if they want to hang extra baskets as well as the one free one provided to every shop.
Then early the following week, the free Wi-Fi system that has been installed to cover the central High Street business district will be turned on for what is called a "soft trial", when any problems can be found and sorted out.
With several new, younger members on board working with Julie, Our Town Motueka is making a big effort to get more local businesses engaged and talking with each other.
To this end, they are organising monthly get-togethers for Friday night drinks and nibbles at Elevation Cafe, through into next year.
They are also committing some funds to improve the business communications network and make the Our Town Motueka website a stronger showcase for local business.
Our Town Motueka's latest newsletter promises a return next winter of the Festival of Lights, and says that a new winter event, the New Zealand National Darts Competition, will be held at the Motueka Recreation Centre.
This is expected to bring about 600 players and their supporters into Motueka for a week-long event during early August.
"This annual event could become part of our regular calendar, boosting business in the slower winter months," Julie says.
