Time to replenish community garden scarecrows

March 21st, 2014

The Community Gardens scarecrows provided an unexpected highlight in the Motueka landscape last year, and a fresh new set of creative creatures will replace them shortly.

About 10 scarecrows were constructed by families in early March 2013 as part of Children's Day (see our story of that day), and one of those photos to the right.

Materials and guidance were supplied by the community gardens committee while creativity and imagination were supplied by the families and children.

In no time the word got around about the creations, and many people - including tourists - were seen taking photos of them. They even featured on TV One's 'Seven Sharp' programme.

As would be expected, one year of New Zealand weather with its winds and rains has finally reduced the creatures to their raw components and the gardens have lost one of their colourful attractions.

The gardens committee have decided to have another scarecrow making session on Sunday March 30th from 1.00pm to 3.00pm. Although not an official part of Children's Day event this year, the scarecrow-making will take place immediately after the Children's Day celebrations at Parklands School.

All materials including clothing are supplied, although if you have any special items of clothing that you'd like to see on your creation then feel free to bring them along. A gold coin donation is suggested to cover some costs.
