Tasman councillors right behind #Gigatown
November 19th, 2014
[TDC press release]
Tasman's mayor is urging residents to support Gigatown Nelson as the voting for the competition gets underway.
Discounted fast broadband and a community development fund of up to $700,000 are on offer for the winning town.
Mayor Richard Kempthorne says many of the benefits are indirect but position the wider region well for the future.
"All of our futures - including rural areas - have a digital component. Good infrastructure will help everyone succeed - from growers and exporters getting to market, to schools and education providers, as well as the service and creative industries," he said.
"At present much of the benefit is indirect for Tasman, but over time the benefits will increase. We need to support our neighbours by enrolling and voting for Gigatown Nelson."
Councillor Judene Edgar says commitment and enthusiasm of Gigatown supporters has been relentless. "So many people have dedicated themselves to this effort. We need to thank them by voting for Nelson in the grand final."
The enthusiasm pays off in other ways, too, she said.
"We're building our community connectedness online and in real life. People are seeing new ways to connect, new opportunities and new ways of doing things. Our combined digital strategy is a solid foundation for a regional fast-fibre future."
Voting closes next Monday, November 24th, so there's not much time. It takes only about 30 seconds to complete. The process is:
- Register or login at www.gigatown.co.nz. If you've already signed up to support Gigatown in the semifinals, you only need log in.
- Register your mobile phone. Wait for text from Gigatown with verification code - it will take only a few seconds.
- Enter verification code on the website.
- Vote for Nelson's Gigaplan for Success.
