Nominations open for Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Board
October 15th, 2014
[Press release]
Nominations for the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Board are now open, for a five year term commencing 25th February 2015.
The Board is an independent body appointed by the Minister of Conservation to control and manage the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve which includes the Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park.
Kaiteriteri Beach is a regional icon, ranked as No. 68 on a list of the world's best beaches, was number 6 on the AA's "most loved beach" poll in March, and number 8 on Trip Advisor's Top 10 New Zealand beaches for 2014.
The reserve is also a major gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park, and home base for water taxis, charter boats, and kayak companies. Summer holidays at Kaiteriteri are part of family legend for many kiwis.
Behind the scenes, however, a small board of just seven passionate people make the big governance decisions that help keep the reserve running smoothly, including the camp, store, and café.
The reserve is entirely self-funding so the Board has a critical role in financial management and work closely with the Reserve Manager Rob Guild to ensure that these public funds are wisely invested.
DOC Director of Conservation Partnerships, Jan Hania says that the Board carries out an important role in the Nelson region.
"Kaiteriteri is an outstanding community asset which many thousands of people enjoy every year. We are fortunate to have had highly experienced governance boards in the past. If people are passionate about achieving great outcomes for Kaiteriteri then I'd really welcome their nomination."
People with a strong local connection to the reserve, business management skills, and a desire to contribute to the public good are invited to put themselves forward. Experience in marketing, tourism, hospitality or conservation management would be valuable.
Nominations close on 31 October. Information is available from Kath Inwood, Ranger Partnerships, at the DOC Whakatu Nelson Office, phone , or email
