Slow uptake of volunteer service by Motueka groups
January 9th, 2014
Motueka community organisations who would like more volunteers to help in their work may find their search easier if they checked on the Volunteer Nelson website.
Volunteer Nelson has recently received several offers of help from volunteers to work in the Motueka and Mapua areas, but few organisations have registered their need for them.
Katy Steele, manager at Volunteer Nelson, says there is bound to be many community organisations and charities here who would like to be helped in this way, but perhaps they do not know about the service.
Matching of volunteers with organisations is done through Volunteer Nelson's website, which was launched in the middle of last year. See our earlier story here.
The website allows people and organisations to set up their profiles, offerings and needs and then for volunteers to search the listings. To date only a handful of Motueka organisations have registered and offered jobs, while there are a larger number of potential volunteers.
Volunteer Nelson receives its funding from a variety of grants including the Department of Internal Affairs, COGS, the Canterbury Community Trust and the local councils.
