Volunteer Nelson reaches out to Motueka groups

July 5th, 2013
[by David Armstrong]

The community volunteering support agency Volunteer Nelson has revved up its operations and is now actively seeking ways of involving Motueka people and organisations more easily.

Previously based on office staff writing down details on paper and matching volunteers with organisations, it has now launched an easy-to-use website that allows volunteers to find work that best suits them. View the website here.

Volunteer Nelson coordinator Jacqui Irwin announced the website and the updated service to a packed group of 27 community workers at the Motueka Community & Whanau July meeting.

She said the website allows people and organisations to set up their profiles, offerings and needs and then for volunteers to search the listings. This enables a far better coverage of the whole Nelson and Tasman region.

The information gathered in the process will also enable a more comprehensive picture of who is offering their voluntary time and what the main needs are in the community.

At present 128 organisations are offering 111 voluntary positions (job listings), and 200 volunteers are on the database actively seeking voluntary work.

Volunteer Nelson has three part-time staff adding up to about two full-time-equivalents. It receives its funding from a variety of grants including the Department of Internal Affairs, COGS, the Canterbury Community Trust and the local councils.

Jacqui says it has secured core funding for the next three years, giving it the base to expand services across the region.

Volunteer Nelson also provides weekly email information newsletters and a Facebook page, and offers assistance and workshops for community groups seeking help in managing their operations.

Motueka Online has a set of pages offering listings for volunteers and organisations, but it has been used very little in recent years and so may become a way of linking to the Volunteer Nelson website from now.
