Motueka Murals team ready to go

April 22nd, 2013

Organisers are confident the recent persistent rains will not hamper preparations for the painting of the first in the series of nine Motueka Murals, scheduled to start on Friday. (See our earlier story here.)

They have been buoyed by the response of sponsors and supporters in recent weeks. As well as grants received last year from TDC and the community board, about $2000 has been donated or promised by a range of local adventure tourism businesses.

Furthermore, Resene Paints has donated all the paint required, along with ancillary items such as dust cloths and T-shirts. The T-shirts, with the Keep New Zealand Beautiful brand, will also include the project's logo (pictured right).

Now all they need is for people of our community to come down to the site - the northern wall of Elevation Cafe - and volunteer a bit of time to help paint one or more pieces of the total mural.

The marking up and painting work will start on Friday evening, April 26th, and be done by teams of volunteers under the guidance of lead artist Alex Burnett. Weather permitting, it is hoped it will all be finished by Sunday May 5th.

All health and safety aspects of the project have been assessed and worked through, and safety will be a top priority. In addition, the organisers are taking public liability insurance.

Photos and videos will be taken frequently to record the process, and the results will be available on social media.

The Motueka Murals project is being run by the community development group Vision Motueka through a committee of four people - Kahu Geor, Paul Johnson, Linda Woodgate and Harold Laarakker. At least one of them will be on site during all times of mark-up and painting, and they will gather and coordinate volunteers.

Anyone with an interest in the project who would like to play a part and paint their piece is welcome to help, whether they are an experienced painter or not; there will be roles for everyone to play.
