Counting down the first of Motueka Murals series
April 13th, 2013
The countdown is on for the creation of the first in a series of nine themed murals on Motueka business walls, and people wanting to help in the painting are being invited to a briefing session.
The mural, based on Motueka nowadays being a centre for adventure tourism, will be painted on the north wall of Elevation Cafe during the week commencing April 29th, with a community celebration party event to wrap it up on Sunday May 5th.
The organisers now need to assemble the teams of volunteer painters for a briefing session to be held at Community House, Decks Reserve, on Thursday April 18th from 1.30pm to 3.00pm. Anyone with an interest in the project, whether they are a painter or not, is welcome to take part, as they will be working under the professional lead artist.
The stunning mural design was created at no cost by Image Creators signwriter Andy Lowe and will appear along the lines of this photo, with some fine details to be finalised. It has cunningly used visual elements to trick the eye into not seeing the various windows and doorways that break up the wall.
The mural project in time will involve nine paintings throughout the town, each based on a theme and with historical elements, and with common visual elements such as the surrounding frame and title for each of the themes.
The Motueka Murals project is being run by a committee of four as a project of the community development group Vision Motueka, which is now approaching its first birthday after a very busy and productive year. (See our earlier story.)
Resene Paints, through Keep Motueka Beautiful, along with several local adventure tourism businesses have donated money for the Elevation project and will be recognised as sponsors. A large slice of the cost has come from grants from Tasman District Council and the Motueka Community Board.
The marking up and painting work will be done by teams of volunteers, under the guidance of lead artist Alex Burnett, who with Andy will also brief participants on all health and safety aspects of the project.
Marking up will be done after dark, using two projectors to spread the mural design onto the wall for tracing. Painting will then take place during the day with small teams of painters involved at any one time.
Resene has donated ancillary items such as dust cloths and T-shirts, and Elevation Cafe owner Izzy Erridge will ensure teams of volunteer painters are well fed and watered. The ending celebration party involving music and food will be in the Elevation forecourt.
