Fabric arts to feature in next exhibition

The second art exhibition to be mounted in four Motueka businesses starting Wednesday April 17th will showcase the work of Moutere textile artist Rowena Lukomska.

A retrospective of Rowena's work (titled 'Retro Row') will be displayed at the Sprig & Fern, Steph Wills dental surgery, Westpac Motueka and at Riwaka Hair. The first exhibition - paintings of Jane Smith - is drawing to a close. (View our story here.)

Rowena learned about stitching threads while sitting on her great great grandmother's knee. She remembers her own small smooth hands and her Gran's discoloured and wrinkled ones. That was almost half a century ago in Wimbourne Minster, in Dorset.

Row went on to train as an art teacher. Whilst pregnant with both of her two boys, she learned and practised using her sewing machine as a drawing tool.

Later, already with an art diploma, she gained her City and Guilds in Creative Embroidery but she found it rather stifling. So she set her own path.

"I just can't stop!" she admitted. Here, in the Moutere she is inspired by the mountains and the sea. And she responds to events like the Christchurch earthquake. Her "Shaken City", on display at the Suter Gallery, has sold recently.

Another, "Tsunami Warning", came after Japan's horrific quake. A personal connection with someone who wasn't at work on the day the New York twin towers fell galvanised her into creating a 9/11 with newspapers and bandages. Rowena's creations are unique.
