More opportunities for local artwork displays
March 3rd, 2013
Tasman artist Jane Smith (pictured right) is taking her work to the public, as more Motueka businesses open their walls for exhibitions of local artists.
Jane is usually at home in Tasman to welcome visitors to her Goddard Road art studio, but like all artists, at the moment she's finding it a bit quiet, so when she was asked if she'd like to display her art more publicly she jumped at the chance.
Jane's art will be seen firstly upstairs at Motueka's Sprig & Fern from Wednesday March 20th. Sprig & Fern owners, Peter and Sue, have agreed to trial monthly openings for invited artists.
At the same time artists are able to display work in the local Westpac bank, in Steph Wills dental surgery and at Riwaka Hair.
Jane's comfortable people and landscapes have a local and domestic feel about them. Her bright, colourful and often humorous watercolour paintings are enjoyed by many. Subjects pictured are of local activities like apple picking, at the beach or just talking. (See one example below - others can be viewed at here website, www.janeforart.co.nz
Most of her paintings are of people, mainly “back on”, of ample proportions. "Comfortable people," she calls them on her website. They seem to be in mid conversation and invite speculation by the viewer of what they might be saying.
The monthly openings and exhibitions in Motueka businesses will be organised by each artist and Jane Wells, who also coordinates the popular Motueka Arts Council's winter workshops.
