Camera Club photos showcased in cinema slideshow

The State Cinema and the Camera Club have joined forces to display a set of quality photos being shown before films, showcasing local talent and landscapes.

Since Christmas the cinema at the Recreation Centre has been showing photos taken by members of the Motueka Camera Club, updating the slideshow which has run between films. About 40 photos have been supplied by the club.

"Over the past few years we have featured photos by Craig Potton, vistas from all over New Zealand," says cinema projectionist, Susan McEnroe. "Our new slideshow features local photos by local photographers."

The update began some months ago when Susan was looking through the photo gallery page of Motueka Online, which at present displays just on 200 local photos. "I discovered the wonderful photos on that site. Inspired by the idea of featuring local photos and conscious of the age of our slide show, I approached David Armstrong to see if we could use the photos from the website."

Susan was advised that the online photos were in a low-resolution form, which enables the website pages to be downloaded quickly, and would not been suitable to be enlarged to fill a cinema screen.

"David directed me to the Motueka Camera Club contact, Lisa Ball. Lisa then put the idea to Club members who willingly donated their photos and a compilation was put together for us.

"The new slideshow, which has only been running since Christmas, has already received positive feedback, particularly from regular customers who are delighted to see Motueka featured with such stunning effect," Susan says.

One of the slides, which is repeated throughout the presentation, lists the names of all the photographers involved and State Cinema Motueka is very grateful for their input. It is intended that slides will be changed from time to time.

Lisa Ball says club members were very excited to have the opportunity of having their work displayed to a wider audience. She also has received some good feedback already, including some wanting copies of specific photos and one person asking if the slideshow could be put onto a DVD and offered for sale to the public.

For our own part, Motueka Online is pleased that we were able to facilitate this cooperative project between two parties, showing the role that the website can have in connecting people within the community.
