First of the season's godwits have arrived

September 19th, 2012
by Shirley Frater

The first flock of Godwits arrived on Monday to the Motueka Sandpit, and all plans are under way for their welcome on Sunday 23 September at the Old Wharf, Motueka Quay.

This year the outdoor event will include art and sculptures. Fourteen groups and artists have registered to be along Motueka Quay to exhibit and sell art or enjoy painting outdoors. Several groups have things especially for children.

There has been big tides this week, with some washing over the sandpit, so there is an abundance of magnificent driftwood and smooth sand for the wood and sand sculptures.

The public are encouraged to come and participate as a group or individuals. There is so much wood and space, the size of the spit can cope with a lot of people and not be crowded.

Access is off the end of Staples Street or along the walkway off Motueka Quay. The event starts at 10am and goes through to 1pm. People can still stay out on the start of the spit to continue working on the sculptures or enjoy seeing what has been done. Every thing is free. (See our earlier story here.)

And, fingers crossed .... it looks like being a fine Sunday after 11 wet ones!
