ATET offers free hospitality and life skills course

January 28th, 2016

Abel Tasman Educational Trust is offering a fees-free Hospitality and Life Skills course aimed at building foundation skills to enable easier movement for 16-19 year olds into further training or employment.

The course, which begins on February 2nd and runs through the year, also uses art and life skills as a platform to help students gain confidence in themselves and their ability to progress in life as an independent adult.

Students will have opportunity to:

  • gain their learner's driving licence,
  • engage regularly in group recreation (popular things in the past have included mini golf, 10 pin bowling, swimming, walking, paintball, BBQ, and movies),
  • contribute to regular group meetings (having a say in their learning environment),
  • make artwork such as silver jewellery, bone carving, tie dye and screen printed T-shirts and painting,
  • be part of a small learning group in a supportive, accepting environment.

The programme is held on site at ATET's facility in Riwaka. A free mini-bus can take students from the Nelson region in and out of the site daily.

There will be an emphasis on working to complete the National Certificate in Educational Achievement Level Two as well as the New Zealand Certificate in Hospitality, Entry Skills, Level Two, while also benefitting from all other aspects of the programme.

The New Zealand Certificate in Hospitality Entry Skills Level 2 covers Health, Hygiene and Food Safety; Self-Management and Communication; Food and Beverage Preparation; Customer Service; and Cooking.

Numeracy and literacy at level one will be a compulsory component of the course as well as completing unit standards and participating in all group activities.

Attendance is compulsory Mondays to Fridays, 9.00am to 2.30pm. The course is split into four blocks of learning, each approximately 10 weeks long, with at least 1 week holiday at the end of each block.

Further details may be obtained from Jane Henderson, the Hospitality and Life Skills Tutor, or ATET Manager Andy Bridge on .
