Big crowd entertained at teddy bears picnic
January 25th, 2016
[by David Armstrong]
"This is how this part of Thorps Bush should be used," was the comment made by one parent as the annual Teddy Bears Picnic happily frollicked along in the picnic area yesterday.
Up to about 200 people, mainly young families, took part in activities which included the old favourites face painting, games and train rides. And of course there were plenty of teddy bears, old and new, on show.
The main entertainment though was the outstandingly versatile Levity Beet, over from Golden Bay, who certainly knows how to entertain the children but also fascinate the parents with his array of improvised and handmade musical instruments and inventive songs. (See photo below.)
The weather was ideal for the event - warm and humid but also cloudy so that families did not have to seek sheltered areas to set up camp and children could run freely without fear of sunburn or overheating.
But the setting, with its large surrounding trees, remains ideal for gatherings and activities of this size, providing an air of friendly intimacy that is hard to raise in the more open Decks Reserve.
The free event is run by Sport Tasman through the good folk of the Motueka Recreation Centre.
