Busy walkway to be resurfaced

January 7th, 2016
[by David Armstrong]

Improvements will be made this month to the increasingly popular cycle and walkway linking Thorps Bush with the Recreation Centre.

The Motueka Community Board in November approved funding to upgrade the Woodlands Canal path as one of the major projects in its "special community projects" list, following input from the public.

With the number of cyclists passing through and around Motueka in recent years, partly as a result of the completion of this section of the Great Taste Trail, many of them have been using this path as a quick route into the town centre for refreshments.

Following quotes from three firms, a contract has been let to CJ Industries to upgrade the walkway. The work involves spreading 20mm crusher dust across the 2-metre width of the path for its approximately. 850 metre length.

It is expected the work will be completed by the end of January. At times some disruption may occur for walkers and cyclists when heavy machinery will block the path, but it is hoped that this will be minimal.

During initial assessment, the contractors said that the existing surface, which was laid in February 2012 (photos below), still provides a sound foundation for the improvement to the surface.
