Community celebrations lined up for a great Motueka Christmas
November 25th, 2015
[by David Armstrong]
With a month until Christmas Day, a great programme of festivities and community celebrations is set to play out in Motueka.
Make sure you don't miss a favourite event, by checking regularly the Events Calendar on this website.
First up, to get us into the summer holiday mood, are the Backyard Games at Decks Reserve this Sunday, put on by Sport Tasman and the Recreation Centre. Alongside will be the summer bike check and tune-up, to get your bike running smoothly for those summer rides.
Then Friday week, December 4th, starts the double banger weekend with the New World Starlight Parade down High Street, which as usual is expected to bring to the centre of town up to one-third of the population as well as many visitors from out of town. This annual event, with its floats and entertainments, is a special Motueka highlight.
Before and after the parade will be a night market in Decks Reserve, the first of what is hoped will be several each year over the Motueka summer.
And on the following Sunday, of course, we have that other traditional highlight, the Motueka A&P Show at Marchwood Park, which also regularly draws a huge chunk of the population. The largely new organising committee have been working hard for months putting together what promises to be another great event.
The following Saturday, December 12th, will see Decks Reserve full of people again for the fourth running of the Birdhurst Christmas in the Park celebration, starting at 7.30pm. Entertainment performances, fun for kids, carol singing, a Christmas message and Santa will all contribute to the festivity.
On December 19th will be Stories in the Park, again at Decks Reserve (it's great that the Decks Reserve green space is being used more often as the hub of community events). Story-tellers will entertain with their true (and whacky) tales of past adventures.
And on Christmas Day itself, another event that is promising to become a Motueka tradition - the Community Christmas Dinner - will be held at Memorial Hall. The free Christmas lunch is open to anyone in the community. Entertainment and carols begin at 11.30am and the meal is served at 12 noon. Places are limited so you will need to register early at The Salvation Army or Community House.
