Entrance space now a High Street delight

For those with short memories, it's time to recognise how well some simple, inexpensive renovations have already transformed one of Motueka's dingiest spots.

Gradually over the past two years staff and pupils of Parklands School have cleared the intimidating undergrowth and prison-like entrance space from High Street into a colourful delight - and there's more to come.

In consultation with the Museum Trust Board, the school first removed the fence that separated the area of land belonging to the school from the Museum site (if you've forgotten, see the last photo below).

That created an open 'town square'-like space, and the longer-term plan is to develop the area adjoining the Motueka Museum into a space for members of the public to enjoy.

The area includes a large protected tree, a garden and path into the school grounds.

So far the school has landscaped its part of the site and installed three large bench seats, and they are now planning a mural for the end wall of the classroom which faces High Street, school principal Martin Major says.

"We are also planning to install a school sign to go between the two large pillars next to the Patisserie Royale.

"Designed some years ago by architect Min Hall, the pillars and sign use design features which are part of the heritage Museum building.

"We will also use the space from time to time as a display area for children's artworks. The current daffodil display, for example, was an initiative of one of our Junior classes." (See the photo above.)

Another display that touched many in the community was the placement of white crosses and red poppies around the time of Anzac Day this year.

Martin says that to date the school has spent more than $2000 on the bench seats and plants, and they welcome community input and contributions towards the overall project.

"For example, we would welcome art installations from local artists and crafts people," Martin says.

Here are three photos of the space taken two years ago.
