State Cinema changes pricing structure
November 24th, 2015
[by David Armstrong]
The State Cinema in Motueka has been pushed into raising some of its admission prices in a deal with its major distributors.
The cinema owner Mark Wentworth sent an email to its subscriber list on the weekend, explaining the changes and asking regular customers to continue supporting the facility.
Prices for seniors (over 65) will increase from $9.00 to $10.00, while those for students aged 5 to 16 go from $8.00 to $8.50. However, "as a gesture to help parents along", children under 5 will be charged $5.00 rather than $8.00 as has been the case.
Standard adult prices remain at $14.00 for evening shows, or $12.00 for movies beginning before 5.00pm
"I feel a blank $8.50 for children under 5 is unfair for families in this area, as we encourage children to come along for the experience of the cinema and what it has to offer," Mark says.
He says the sister Nelson State Cinema has had two across-the-board price rises in the last three years, whereas Motueka State Cinema has not had any price alteration for more than four years.
"We have had challenges to increase our prices to be in line with Nelson State Cinema, along with other provincial areas around the country, and I have had to now meet the film companies half way and alter our pricing structure for some.
"Nelson State Cinema is currently charging $11.00 for seniors and children up to 15 years of age, no matter if they are pre-school age or not."
"When we are seen to be out of kilter with other areas in the country especially with our expensive digital projector system, questions are asked, so we have had to meet the industry leaders half way and see what happens.
"Our cinema is a community asset and is seen as an entertainment hub for many thousands of people a year. We have the highest possible resolution of light on the screen and clarity, along with 7.1 sound format for all films when that sound format is provided. Around 70 percent of films these days are 7.1.
"This Motueka cinema is locally owned and privately operated to serve our community, so please keep supporting the industry and State Cinema Motueka. We appreciate your custom."
Motueka's other cinema, the boutique Gecko, has uniform pricing across all ages - $9.00 for Mondays to Wednesdays and $13.00 for Thursdays to Sundays.
