New film captures Kahurangi conservation work
February 24th, 2015
Local conservation group Friends of Flora have produced a 13-minute video that tells the story of their work in partnership with the Department of Conservation.
The two partners aim to bring about the protection and/or return of endangered and threatened flora and fauna to the Flora Stream catchment area in Kahurangi National Park.
Fourteen years after the group was established, they have successfully reintroduced two of New Zealand's most endangered bird species into the area and succeeded in controlling predators to an extent that enables the native biota to breed in relative safety.
The film seeks to build support for the work of Friends of Flora and also to illustrate the critical role that individuals and communities must play in conservation.
It explains the history of the group and how they go about their work, including trapping, pest control and the re-introduction of species including the great spotted kiwi, whio and blue duck.
The film has been beautifully shot and expertly produced, and is worth viewing even by people not interested in the conservation work. The scenery is outstanding and the natural science videography is superb. .
