Second strike at pest vines in Riwaka Valley

November 20th, 2015

Project De-Vine, set up to clear pest vines out of Golden Bay and around Abel Tasman National Park, is holding its second working bee in the Riwaka Valley next Saturday, November 28th.

This follows the hugely successful first effort recently, when a group of about 20 that managed to deal with over 480 vines, some of them massive. (Photos right and below)

This time the volunteers will work on two properties - Fairfield Orchards and Frasers Orchards, both of which are heavily infested with vines.

Project De-Vine organisers say the owners are keen to get on top of the vines and by giving this area a big hit now, it will knock the re-seeding to the area around, save them a lot of time and show the owners in this area what can be done in a few hours.

"This helps raise our contributions towards possible future funding. Members of our experienced weed team will show how to effectively cut and paste the vines," they say in a notice circulating online.

"Bottles of gel are supplied and are free for you to take to work on your own property. This is a great chance for the many landowners in this area to meet and work with us.

"It does not matter how much you know as you will be teamed up with those that know the pest vines. The properties are easy to walk around on, with occasional scrambles and maybe a few climbs for those so inclined."

Volunteers are advised to bring sturdy shoes, gloves and secateurs, loppers or retractable hand saws for the big vines. Please bring your own water. Some snacks will be provided at the tea break with hot water and drink options.

"The more folk can help the better, as there are plenty of vines to share around. Anyone over 16 can learn how to cut and paste the vines. Younger children, 12 years and up, can help to locate the stems. Women welcome, we have women in our weed team - it is not just blokes work!"

The working bee is sponsored by Nelson Building Society, Motueka Community Board, Ideal Cup and the suppliers of the Glyphosate bottles: Cut'n'Paste based on Waiheke Island.

If you want to take part, meet at Frasers orchard and fruit stall, Riwaka, at 9.30am. It's past the Kaiteriteri turnoff, on the road up to the start of the Takaka hill. Assemble in their car park. Finish about 1pm.
