Council offers free microchipping clinics for dogs

October 20th, 2015
[TDC press release]

Tasman District Council will conduct free microchipping clinics during November for dogs registered in the Tasman district.

Microchipping is a legal requirement for dogs born after June 2006, with the exception of dogs kept solely or principally for the herding or droving of stock.

Failing to have your dog microchipped is an offence under the Dog Control Act 1996, the penalty for which is an infringement fine of $300.

In Motueka the clinics will be held on 12th and 19th November, from 8.30am - 11.00am, at the Council Service Centre, 7 Hickmott Place.

Tasman District Council animal control officer John Bergman says the Council encourages owners to microchip their animals as early as possible. "Microchipping is the best tool we have for reuniting lost, stolen, or stray dogs with their owners."

Microchips:

  • Are the size of a grain of rice and implanted under the skin just forward of the shoulder blades going up the neckline
  • carry a number unique to your dog
  • are a transponder which responds to a scanner
  • are not a transmitter, there is no power source
  • details are kept on the National Dog Database, managed by the Department of Internal Affairs.
