Music festival planned for new year

December 17th, 2015

A half-day festival featuring mainly local musicians and hosted by Motueka's young people will be staged at Riverside Community at the end of January.

Organiser Stephen Evans has taken on the challenge of mounting such an event because of his passion for giving local young people an outlet for their musical talents.

The Riverside Freedom Festival will also provide mentoring of youth by experienced technicians in such crafts as event presentation, stage manufacture, sound production and lighting.

The idea originally arose from the Youth Summit held in May 2015 as part of the Motueka 2030 community consultation.

The festival, to be held on Saturday, January 30th from 10.00am to 11.30pm, will be "an uplifting gathering to celebrate local musicians, artists and some very special guests from across the ditch including Matiu Te Huki and Bob Hilary and the Massive Mellow", says Stephen.

Local legends The Dions will headline, but live music will be cranking from 10.30am.

Stephen says there will be lots of free activities for kids and plenty of options to eat and be fed in other ways. The event will also feature many youth acts throughout the day.

"The Riverside community offers a stunning backdrop to the event and has a majestic environment to dance, relax and be inspired in," Stephen says.

"Information will also be available on how we can be pro-active in our local and global communities. Most of all, this day is about creative expression. The Riverside Freedom Festival has all the ingredients for the ultimate summer day out for 2016.

"It's child friendly but there's space for the adults to party hard. So join us to celebrate this wonderful artistic community and feel free to express yourself. Bring the energy, bring the aroha, bring the Music!"

Other local acts will include local legends Irie Vibes and Tillerman, with The Dions to bring it home later on.
