World-class dance troupe to perform in Motueka

October 13th, 2015

Motueka has pulled off another coup, with the highly acclaimed Black Grace dance troupe choosing us as one of only four South Island centres it will perform in as part of its 20-venue tour.

This is largely thanks to the upgrading work on Memorial Hall over the past few years by Mark Wentworth, volunteer sponsors and TDC. The world class sound and lighting and improved stage facilities now enable top acts to perform here.

Black Grace is celebrating its 20 years of performing with a tour of 20 New Zealand centres during November and early December. Motueka will host them on December 1st at 7.30pm.

For the past two decades Black Grace has taken the world by storm with its powerful and highly acclaimed productions of Pacific Contemporary dance, most choreographed by famous founder Neil Ieremia.

For this celebratory tour, tickets will be only $20 at the door (no bookings required). This is Black Grace unplugged, returning to their touring roots to honour NZ, their people, their past and their future.

Audiences will see some of Black Grace's most popular and iconic short works, including Minoi, Method and Human Language to mention but a few.

The programme will also feature brand new works by original Company members Sean MacDonald and Siaosi Mulipola, presented in a relaxed and informal setting but with the company's trademark energy and breath-taking physicality ever-present.

"Black Grace have clinical accuracy and jaw-dropping physicality. Their finely-honed bodies exude an inspirational energy and move seemingly without the usual constraints of time and gravity," wrote an Otago Daily Times review in 2013.

Black Grace has toured throughout North America, playing to audiences of thousands and making its mark at prestigious venues and festivals such as The Kennedy Centre in Washington DC, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in Massachusetts and on New York's 42nd Street.

The company has also toured to Europe, Japan, Australia, New Caledonia, Guam, South Korea and Mexico.
