Kaiteriteri to get new sewage pipe system

December 10th, 2015

Tasman District Council is working on a project to improve the transfer of sewage from Kaiteriteri to the Motueka wastewater treatment plant.

The main part of the project involves the replacement of the current pipe running from Stephens Bay to where the cycle trail meets the Riwaka to Kaiteriteri Road.

The pipe upgrade is needed to meet future growth in Kaiteriteri, particularly in the Beaches and Bays subdivision, and to better manage the large temporary population increase experienced during summer months.

TDC project manager Chris Blythe told the Motueka Community Board on Tuesday that the resource consent for the current wastewater pipeline, which lies under the estuary from Tapu Bay, expires in 2018.

"It is highly unlikely that another resource consent would be granted for a replacement pipeline under the estuary, and the Council has identified an alternative pipeline route in the road," said Chris.

"It is beneficial to have the new pipeline in the road as it is easier to maintain, repair and renew sections, and the road surface offers a level of protection to the pipework. Keeping it in Council Road reserve also avoids placing a wastewater pipeline in private property."

Tonkin and Taylor has undertaken an option study which is being developed into a preliminary design. This stage of work will consider the future road alignments, reconfiguration of pump stations, the local geology, and key cultural and historical sites.

The proposed 200mm wastewater pipeline will be gravity fed from an existing vessel adjacent to the cycle track just north of Cederman Lane. Sewage from Kaiteriteri, Stephens Bay and Tapu Bay will be pumped up to the holding tank.

Chris said it was possible that the old pipe could be flushed out and used to send potable water in the reverse direction, back to Kaiteriteri, but no thought is being given to that at present.

Council hopes to go out to tender on the project by mid-2016.
