Our Town Motueka examines its future direction
September 10th, 2015
[by David Armstrong]
The business promotion group Our Town Motueka will be looking at some significant changes to its operation when it holds its annual general meeting next Thursday.
First on the list, if not first on the agenda, is finding a replacement for energetic Dave Moloney as chairman of the group. Dave is stepping down from the helm but will remain available the committee.
Even more significant will be some serious consideration about not only the core purpose of the group but also its name.
Over the past month OTM has been running a Facebook-based competition to find a new name that makes it look more inclusive to newcomers and visitors (see our earlier story). Results of that competition have not yet been made public.
Several workshops run in recent months by the present committee has thrashed out how OTM sees itself best serving its members.
Most businesses in Motueka's CBD and urban areas are charged a targeted rate by Tasman District Council, which is then used to fund OTM's operations. It is the use of that budget which is often a matter of debate.
Competing ideas have usually included administrative costs (for the paid part-time administrator), running community events such as the Starlight Parade, running special promotions for the retailers such as the recent Try Our Kai initiative, and building or improving its website and social media presence.
The outgoing committee has examined and debated the organisation's purposes and strategy and a proposed budget for the coming year, possibly as well as a suggested name change, for the new committee to decide on.
The annual general meeting is open to all businesses and the general public. This year it will be held at the Elevation Cafe and Bar beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 17th.
