Group seeks memories of Abel Tasman National Park

Wilsons Abel Tasman has set up a Facebook group, called "Memories of Abel Tasman National Park", to capture classic local stories about life, work and holidays in the park.

"It doesn't matter if your family goes back 500 years, 5 years, 5 months or maybe haven't even arrived here yet, we have created a place to share memories, photos and reconnect with old and future friends," says business owner Darryl Wilson.

The group is open to all people with fond memories of the Abel Tasman coast. Known locally as "Down the Bay" it can cover any bay or inlet along the coast, from Nelson to Totaranui. Anyone can join the group, and then contribute or simply read the stories.

Many of the coast's recreational pioneers are now over 70 years old and the memories of this generation may be lost.

As members of the older generations are not usually familiar with Facebook, it will rely on their children and grandchildren to seek out photos, videos and stories to upload and share with the group. Stories and comments can be removed if issues arise.

"I hope this page grows to be a fun historical resource for all," says Darryl on the page. "Enjoy looking back on the days of cellphone-free life down the bay, the adventures we all had and the real sense of community."

Facebook users should go to and click "Join". The most liked stories each week up to the end of February will be rewarded with trips "Down the Bay".
