Positive behaviour scheme to be reinforced

November 6th, 2015

Saumaki Saumaki and Luke Inglis deliver the latest Community 'Gotcha (being good) Cards' this week to Maureen at the Rec Centre

The Positive Behaviour for Learning scheme (PB4L) is being reintroduced in Motueka shops to encourage positive behaviour among our students.

The scheme was introduced a few years ago but has "fizzled a bit lately", so the participating schools - Motueka South, Parklands and Motueka High School - are redistributing the cards for businesses to give to well behaved young customers.

Motueka South deputy principal Linda Beatson says PB4L is an effective approach to behaviour management in schools.

"We find that it effectively supports our 'Keys to Success' strategy of bringing out the positive in students to help them grow into good citizens.

"As part of the programme, each of our schools has just three simple rules or expectations, which cover all eventualities. For example, at Motueka South, ours are M - Manage Self, S - Show Respect. and S - Strive to Learn.

"A few years ago, our local PB4L 'Coaches' group introduced an initiative called 'Community Congratulations Cards'. The idea is that we provide little cards for businesses and organisations around town, to distribute (for positive behaviour, good manners etc) to any school-age student from anywhere.

"The businesses only need to stamp their name on the back of each card and give them out to encourage positive behaviour in their shop. Students can then take the card back to their own school to be exchanged for whatever token is used there.

"The 'Community Gotcha' scheme started well, initial feedback was very positive, especially from the Library and doctors' surgeries and some shops, but it has fizzled a bit lately, so we are reintroducing card supplies to supportive businesses around town this week.

"We won't be visiting all premises because some didn't use the cards we supplied previously and we don't have time to waste. But businesses who don't have cards or who have run out and would like to be part of this positive initiative are most welcome to phone any of the three schools for more supplies and we will happily pop them around."
