Motueka pottery celebrated in museum exhibition

November 3rd, 2015
[by Liz Mahoney]

A diverse exhibition by 11 potters at the Motueka Museum marks 40 years of clay play at the Motueka Pottery Workshop.

The potters meet weekly at the Riwaka Domain to make decorative and domestic objects in many methods and materials. Traditional, sculptural, whimsical and folk art styles are on display at the show that runs until Friday, November 20th.

Meet the Mot Pots:

  • Barbara Wilson has been making pottery for 38 years and regularly produces new designs of mostly domestic ware. Barbara perfected her techniques while working as a part time potter in Te Anau.
  • Original "Mot Pot" Anne Classen continues to support the club's activities as well as making exquisite figurines.
  • Sherry Williams has re-discovered her talent for making quirky type figures that she made when she lived in Canterbury.
  • Deb Fellowes is a stoneware clay enthusiast who makes domestic ware with glazed textures.
  • Liz Yockney creates a host of endearing characters from flying pigs to seagulls with attitude. A decorative pottery tutor, Liz taught at the Motueka Art Workshops in August.
  • Starting with the group in 2005 Lyn Shirley experiments with white and stoneware clays to make sculptural pieces.
  • Artist and potter Sarah Douglas who experiments with terracotta clay for domestic ware and decorative pieces, sells at Potter's Patch.
  • Holder of an advanced diploma in creativity from the Learning Connection, Pam Wood also spent a year at Auckland's Elam Art School. She sells sculptural pieces from her own gallery at 83 Trewavas Street - "83 By The Sea".
  • Diane Reedy started potting in 1985 and is adept at making large sculptural works from raku and mid-fire white clays. Back in NZ after 35 years near Byron Bay Australia, Diane serves as the group's chairperson.
  • Known for her large colourful abstract paintings, new potter Cushla Moorhead has applied herself diligently in learning how to use the wheel.
  • Inspired by Deco potter Clarice Cliff's colourful work, Liz Mahoney has produced wall pockets and shrines.

Motueka Pottery Workshop runs the annual Riwaka Market Day on January 2nd every year.
