Parklands School

Special character

As the first established primary school in Motueka, we see ourselves as the heart of the community and we have the community at heart. As newcomers settle in our town, the school increasingly reflects a range of cultures and, as a result, is becoming a vibrant and exciting learning community.

Among the school's key points of difference are its smart school uniform, bilingual classes and a range of programmes to meet the needs of the whole child, educational and social.

The school's "community hub" approach encourages parents to be involved in their child's education and enables families to access support on site. A school-based social worker and Strengthening Families coordinator are available to provide assistance to children and families.

The Motueka Family Service Centre is already located in the school's grounds and a new community dental clinic will soon be constructed on the school site to cater for all preschool to Year 8 children throughout the Motueka area.

The school is also a hub of activity, with students engaged in a wide variety of academic, sport and extra-curricular activities. There are also opportunities for students to extend themselves and take active roles in the community, such honours student leaders and and enviro reps.

Our new heated 25m swimming pool complements our fantastic facilities - the extensive sports fields and playground, children's gardens, modernised classrooms, and the new library and technology centres.

A consistent and fair school-wide approach to behaviour management, with an emphasis on building respectful relationships and 'catching' children being good, ensures a happy and safe learning environment for it everyone.

We welcome new families and encourage you to come in and have a look for yourself. You may like to enquire further about the schools Headstart program for new entrants, the Year 7 - 8 leadership programme Future Thinkers group for gifted and talented students, and stressfree homework programme.

Our website

We have a very active website which is used by pupils to show their work and keep up-to-date with all the activities in the school. If you browse it, and in particular look at the pupils' blogs on it, you will get a good idea of how active this school is. You can see the website by clicking here »

Background

Motueka Primary School was established in 1857 and became part of the Motueka District High School, which was later developed on our Pah Street site. The present Parklands buildings were opened in 1944, and then in 1955, the secondary department transferred to the new Motueka High School in Whakarewa Street.

The following year the name ‘Parklands’ was adopted for the Primary School. Today, Parklands School is a co-educational state School and the largest full primary School in the Motueka district.

The School is centrally located in the township, close to the business area. It is also handy to community facilities and to the region’s rivers, beaches and national parks. Amongst the School Community, are a wide diversity of lifestyles, cultures, philosophies and beliefs.

Parklands, as the name suggests, is set in a pleasantly park-like environment, with large grassed areas, established shade trees and landscaped gardens. The School has extensive sports fields and playground facilities. Teaching spaces include modernised classrooms, library and a new Technology Centre catering for Year 7 and 8 students from Parklands and other local primary schools.

The School encourages high achievement in academic, cultural and sporting activities. Significant features of the School programme include programmes for students with special learning needs or abilities, opportunities for students to learn Te Reo Maori and educational experiences outside the classroom.

Our Mission: “Educational excellence for all”
Our Vision: When children leave our school they will have developed the abilities, attitudes and ideals necessary for them to become valued members of today’s society, able to make a positive contribution to tomorrow’s world.
