Report on Community Issues survey into the Motueka library upgrade or rebuild, June 2011
Term 2 2011
Mr Reid, the Motueka High School's year 10 Community Issues teacher, invited David Ogilvie, the Chairman for the Motueka Community Board, to talk about some important issues for term 2 2011. The whole class then did a brainstorm on interesting issues around Motueka. We picked the most recent ones and did a class vote and ended up with the Motueka Library Upgrade.
To do a survey, the class had to write up a questionnaire that covered all the key questions to successfully find results. Mr Reid then sent in the questionnaire to the head librarian of the Tasman District Council, Glennis Coote, to see what she thought. She sent back some suggestions on the questionnaire and we took her suggestions into consideration and put some of them into our survey.
We then interviewed 432 members of the public, over a period of four days. After we tabulated our results we then made graphs and then put them onto slideshows. The best slideshows were then chosen to present to the interested parties. The results we found were:
- 120 of the 432 people interviewed were females in the 31 - 60 age group
- 57% of respondents were ratepayers
- 48% were regular users of the library
- 28% never use the library
- 63% believed the library currently met the needs of the community it serves.
- 45% had no concerns about the library but 28% thought the library was often too crowded.
- 84% preferred for the library to be upgraded on site rather than be rebuilt.
- If the library cannot be upgraded on the present site 61% preferred Deck's Reserve as the alternative site.
- Nearly everyone expected to be consulted when conceptual plans were drafted.
- The most popular facilities desired in the new library layout were separate internet space and separate children's play area.
It is hoped the results of this survey will be useful in helping the TDC in making decisions concerning the library upgrade that reflect the wishes of our community.
It was apparent that people expressed their views on the basis that the cost of the rebuild would be borne by Motueka ratepayers rather than all TDC ratepayers. This may have influenced the strong support for an upgrade on site rather a complete rebuild. People may have thought an upgrade on site would be a cheaper option compared with a total rebuild.
