Various questions about the history of key Motueka buildings, places and activities
We have a whole lot of questions here asked by pupils at Motueka South School as part of a March 2011 class project. Read them below and if you have any answers let us know and we'll fill them in as we go. The questions are numbered, so if you answer one or more simply tell us which number they refer to.
Q1: The Motueka Bridge: What is the Motueka Bridge made out of and when was it built? And does it have another name? What is the record for the highest river level? What was the first bridge built on the Motueka river? What is the width of the bridge? Is it illegal to jump off the bridge? How long did it take to build the bridge? Why did the Riwaka people not want an official opening for the first Motueka bridge?
Q2: Horticulture: Who was the first orchardist in Motueka? When did apples start growing in Motueka? When did hops first start growing in Motueka? And kiwifruit?
Q3: The Post Office Hotel: When was the Post Office hotel built, and when/how/why did it burn down? Who owns it? Was it ever the post office in Motueka?
Q4: The Gothic: How old is the Gothic restaurant and bar building? When was it turned into a restaurant? How many owners has it had?
Q5: What is the history of the Motueka Motty Malones site?

Q11: Is there anybody still alive that worked on the Janie Seddon? When was the Janie Seddon shipwrecked?
Answer: My Grandad used to work on the Janie Seddon. Hugie Scott. He is the uncle of the Talley boys and still lives in Motueka.
Q12: What is the history of the Muses Cafe - who built it, what used to be there before it got built and who owned it?
Q13: Why were trains not used in Motueka?
