Early 1920s rugby football photos of the Tikaokao or Tikao-kao club
The Tikaokao Club was formerly part of the Riwaka Club. Strictly speaking there was a Riwaka Club from 1884, then a split in 1910 when Wanderers was a team from Brooklyn area and Tikaokao from Riwaka. Then in 1936 these two teams reformed to make the Riwaka Club again. The name Tikaokao means fowl and the symbol was a crowing rooster with the words "While I live I crow".
The Motueka Historical Society have some photos at the Research Room at the Motueka Museum. The Riwaka Rugby Club also has many photos and a large signboard with the symbols on.And they produced a book for the 125th which I'm sure they will sell you if you get in touch with them.
My father played in this period but he played for Wanderers.
Coralie Smith, Motueka

I have a photo of my dad JWM (Melville) Askew in the Wanderers 1913. Dad's brother Lawrence Manson Askew's name is on the memorial gates as he was killed in the 2nd battle of the Somme age 21. There is a stone in the cemetery with his name on, he is buried at Colincamps in France. I wonder if any photos of Dad are in Mot Museum.
Michael Askew, Upper Hutt
Melville Askew is middle row 2nd from right - he has put a tick on his knee. Football has team and date 1913.
