Young local musicians to tour the Tasman region
May 17th, 2017
Nelson Tasman's finest up and coming youth musicians will take centre stage at a series of live concerts touring across the region this winter.
'Rock the Region' is gearing up to hit the road, with youth music gigs taking place at venues across the Motueka, Nelson, and Golden Bay communities.
The concert series will feature over 12 unique acts, comprised of no less than 30 youth musicians, aged between 15-24 years. Most of the performers will be fresh from the regional Smokefree Rockquest Finals, which makes Rock My Region a perfect opportunity for them to further progress their skills in front of a live audience.
The live acts will include pop, rock, punk and reggae bands, as well as solo and duo acoustic acts. House DJs will also perform at selected shows.
"We have assembled an epic lineup which highlights the depth of talent we have across our region. It will be great to see them up on stage sharing their music with their peers," says event organizer Paul McConachie. "It is also an excellent excuse to come out of that winter hibernation and use live music to re-energize"
The tour kicks off in Motueka on Saturday 27 May, with a special show scheduled at the Motueka Memorial Hall. From there, the tour lights up Nelson's newly refurbished Trafalgar Centre Northern Extension on Saturday 17 June before accumulating with a grand finale at Golden Bay's Pohara Hall on Saturday 24 June.
Not only will young people feature exclusively on stage, but they will also feature behind the scenes, undertaking a range of production and event management roles.
A technical production workshop will run conjointly with the Nelson gig, giving young people an opportunity to learn about how to set up and operate sound and lighting equipment.
The events are strictly alcohol and drug free, are free to attend and targeted at 15-24 year olds. Security and youth workers will be on hand to ensure a happy and safe time for all.
Rock the Region is supported by the Nelson City Councils, Tasman District Council, Volunteer Nelson, and the Ministry of Youth Development. Youth and Community Works and Mot Youth Acre are overseeing the delivery of the events. For more info: https://www.facebook.com/events/731648267016367/
