Riuwaka to miss out on UFB upgrade

February 1st, 2017
[by David Armstrong]

It looks like Riuwaka residents and businesses will have most to complain about in the Tasman area with maps showing where ultrafast broadband (UFB) will be available over the next few years.

Files for the UFB2 areas from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment's GETS system show the areas that are being indicated as being covered by UFB2 between 2018 and 2024. (See our earlier story.)

While all of urban Motueka and Kaiteriteri are shown (see below), Riuwaka is missing, as is Lower Moutere. Other maps on the files show areas to be covered in Takaka, Ruby Bay (and most of Mapua), Brightwater and Wakefield.

To be honest, I didn't expect Riwaka to be included. Hopefully they are on the next rollout of rural broadband which will improve things considerably. Otherwise, the local community might want to consider how they could work with the school (who have UFB), Vodafone (who offer decent rural broadband through the 4G Network) and a provider like IKS (who provide our WiFi in town and can assist with rural setups). The main thing is - don't let a poor standard connection get in the way of making sure you have access to decent Internet.
