The recently opened Motueka Community Store in Whakarewa Street has made its first donation of proceeds, with the recipients being the indoor swimming pool fundraising committee.

The new store's owner and manager Heather Hoad said she was delighted to present the $500 cheque to Sue Clark, fundraiser for the Motueka Swimming Pool yesterday.

"This will be the first of many donations the store will make to support the swimming pool building project," she said.

The project will enclose, heat and modernise the present High School pool, adding new changing facilities for the community along with a therapeutic and warm-down pool.

Fundraising has been active since early this year, and the team are now half-way to their target.

The Motueka Community store is a non-profit charity organisation set up to respond to needs within the community. All profits from the sale of donations are returned the Community to support local projects.

Heather Hoad set up the store to support the health and welfare of families within our community, and said she is very committed to supporting the swimming pool as she considers this as to be an essential need for Motueka residents.

"Not only does a swimming pool offer a place to exercise but also a place for social gathering and interaction, a place to relax and find release from the every day stresses of life.

"It also provides low impact exercise for those with muscle and joint problems, and learning to swim creates safety in the community," she said.

"Learning to swim is a life saving skill. No one dies from not learning how to play rugby! "
