Kai Fest team planning 'edge events'

December 12th, 2016

The Motueka Kai Fest, to be held for the first time next April, will include workshops, talks and demonstrations related to food production and use.

Although the pageant, entertainment, games and stalls to be held at Decks Reserve on Sunday, April 9th will be the main event, the organising committee is also encouraging community groups and food related businesses to host events during the week leading up to Sunday.

Some of these "edge events" may involve fun competitions, but most will focus on providing information and hands-on learning about food and in particular locally produced kai.

A programme of edge events is being put together by the community group Our Kai Motueka, which as the name implies is dedicated to food resilience and encouraging the growing and eating of local food.

They already have a team of five local volunteers, led by Irma Jager and Petra Stephenson, and have been meeting fortnightly to prepare the programme. So far at least seven edge events have been identified.

They have applied to the Motueka Community Board's Discretionary Fund for $490.00 to assist in offering a range of workshops, talks and demonstrations.

If approved at tomorrow's meeting of the board, the funds will help the printing of hand-outs, venue hire and reimbursement for tutors involved in the workshops.

Our Kai Motueka is appealing to any community group or small business which may be able to host relevant edge events, to contact them so they can be slotted into the week-long program.

The Motueka Kai Fest team will include advertising as part of the overall event promotion, starting in February 2017. For more information, go to www.motuekakaifest.nz.
