Another big crowd for Motueka's season opener
December 3rd , 2016
[by David Armstrong]
The summer season opened last night with another successful running of the Starlight Christmas Parade, followed by the Night Market.
Threatening skies and a brisk wind did not deter upward of 3000 people lining High Street to watch and wave to the passing 49 floats (the largest number ever), including a larger than usual number of of dance groups.
And it's always good to see original ideas in some new displays, such as the team portraying the TV series "Meet the Midwife", with their full uniforms, habits and old bicycles.
Prize winners, chosen by judges Tim Howie, Viv Tibbs and Cr David Ogilvie, were announced today. They were:
Winner of Community Organisation - Tasman Gymnastics Club,
Winner of Family and Friends - Samoan RSE Performers,
Winner of Schools - Laura Ingram Kindergarten,
Winner of the Business category - Abel Tasman Canyons,
Winner of the best overall float - Country Kids for the third year running.
With too many highlights to specifically mention, here is a selection of photos of the people and the floats.
