Creative beanies and dog coats in winter competition

July 28th, 2014

Some amazing creations figured amongst the prizewinners of this year's "Make a Beanie and/or Dog Coat" competition, run by the Motueka Arts Council.

With judging over, the entries are about to go on display in retail windows in High Street, until 12th August. These include Bay Pharmacy, Amcal Pharmacy, Unichem Pharmacy, Whitwells Menswear and Potters Patch. (Also see photos below.)

The competition judge was Liz Hofmann, a craft artist of Motueka. She said there was "a high standard of work in the entries this year. But it was disappointing that there was only one entry made by a child.

There were seven Beanie entries and 10 Dog Cats. Prize winners were:

  • Most colourful beanie: Winner Hayley Lawn with Mrs. Headhunter, runner up Val A'Court.
  • Storybook or film character: Winner Shirley Wallace with Cat5 in the Hat.
  • Traditional Beanie using only wool: Winner Shirley Wallace, runner up Rosalie Cruickshank.
  • Beanie using Recycled materials: Winner Jane Mender [she used plastic bags].
  • Most colourful dog coat: Winner Sandra Young.
  • Dog coat using recycled materials: Winner Poppy Young.
  • Dog coat using wool: Winner Nerrette Sinclair.
  • Matching dog coat and beanie: Winner Catherine Inwood.

Special Awards:

  • Most practical dog coat: Nerrette Sinclair.
  • Most ingenious beanies: Mr. and Mrs. Headhunter [complete with lights].
  • Best beanie design featuring texture and colour: Rosalie Cruickshank, 'Grug'
  • Dog coat made by a child: Poppy Young

"There are some tremendously creative beanies and dog coats as well as the practical ones, a great variety of styles, materials and colours," said Shirley Frater, chair of Motueka Arts Council.

"Fun ones as well as warm ones. Many of the articles showed excellent workwomanship. It's a very good project to have for winter."
