Painting of horticulture mural begins today
April 26th, 2014
[by David Armstrong]
Despite the threat of poor weather, preparations for the third Vision Motueka mural were completed this week and painting will begin today.
The mural, themed "Horticulture" in Motueka, is being painted on the south wall of the Super Liquor store, in direct view from customers at Z Energy, and is already gathering many interested observers.
Being a plain concrete tilt-slab wall, it needed a sealant coat to begin. This required two consecutive dry days before being applied, so there were initial fears that the recent rain deluges may not allow work to begin for some time. But fair weather finally did arrive.
Next came the primer coats for inside the rectangle of the mural (white) and outside the border (grey). Thanks to the loan of a scissor lift from Motueka Hire and the help of the staff at Z Energy and Super Liquor, this was done in rapid time.
Last night a group of nine volunteers used the overhead projector and SUV of Image Creator's co-owner Andy Lowe to mark the outlines of all the sections to be painted. (See photos below.)The outlines were on transparencies created from the original art work of lead artist Soo Yir Lammers.
Today a good number of painting volunteers are expected to begin painting the background colours of blue (sky) and green (fields) before detailed work begins.
All the people helping create this work are doing it voluntarily under Soo Yir's direction. Dulux, via Guthrie Bowron, are donating all the paints. Monetary donations are being received from many orchardists, plus grants from TDC and Keep Motueka Beautiful.
