High School talent quest among the best ever

May 24th, 2014
[by Marian Painter]

Talent Quest 2014 was celebrating 50 years as an event at Motueka High School on Thursday night, as well as 25 years of support from Talley's.

The final certainly did not disappoint and many in the audience thought it one of the best shows ever. There is no shortage of new talent in the school.

As usual there was a range of bands, instrumentalists and dancers. But this year's finest performances went to the solo performers Caleb Salmond and Stella Bogdanoff.

Caleb gave a wonderfully mature and funny performance inspired by Ronnie Barker's 'Mispronunciation' sketch. Stella recited a poem she had written full of subtle wit and thought provoking moments around the dark hours of 3.23am - a subject many adults will have related to with deep feeling.

It was a hard choice for the judges to finally decide on Stella for the winner and also the Star Prize for 2014.

The other notable performer of the evening was Lachlan Burne for his amazing talent on the guitar in three different bands. Daniel Tideman in his final year of Talent Quest gave a stirring performance of 'Europa' on the saxophone.

It was also refreshing to see the 'rockers' Harry Alexander and Julian Mittman perform a very moving performance of 'El Mariachi' - a classical guitar piece from Mexico (and they dressed to suit the musical style, complete with Sombreros).

Yet again the school stood proud of its achievements and recognised the help and support from staff, fellow students and parents to make the evening another huge success.
