Children's theatre off to successful start

June 20th, 2014

Imagine Theatre's two-week season of 'The Wind in the Willows' got off to a successful start last night.

Kenneth Grahame's classic novel, adapted by Alan Bennett, was brought to the stage with colour, verve and innovation, capped off by the appearance of many well-portrayed characters.

The wild wood, the river bank, the open road and Toad Hall all merged into an effective performance space with much use of the auditorium as well as the stage.

Directed by Murray Owen and Helen McClintock, with Helen Mayhew as musical director, 'The Wind in the Willows' makes for entertainment that will be enjoyed equally by adults and children.

The excellent set design by Linda Morris, and effective costuming and lighting added to the atmosphere.

The first half in particular moved seamlessly from one scene to another, a credit to the young performers and their support crew. The audience soon became caught up in the adventures of Ratty, Mole and Toad, and an array of interesting characters met along the way.

Jemima Meegan was a true stage leader as the nautical Ratty - a well-rehearsed characterisation enhanced by great mannerisms and a fantastic tail. Her performance was well supported by the very promising Louie Morris as Mole who certainly steals a couple of second half scenes.

Toad, meanwhile, was played in a lively manner by Paige Jarvie-Brown. Tui Guerrero, as the depressed but well-read horse Albert got plenty of laughs in an excellent display of stone-faced comedy.

Taylor Jarvie-Brown gave able support as the more elderly Badger. The smaller roles, and there were many, were generally carried off in fine style.

The Wind in the Willows season continues at Imagine Theatre June 20-21 at 7pm and June 22 at 3pm, and again June 26-27-28 at 7pm and June 29 at 3pm. Tickets available from Amcal and Unichem pharmacies. Bookings recommended as there is limited seating.
